THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES ARE FREE
The story of an extraordinary woman and a unique company
The story of children’s dreams come true: As an energetic young girl, Margarete Steiff fought for her place in life, against much resistance.
With a pin cushion in the shape of a small stuffed elephant, she wrote the first chapter of the unprecedented success story, which is still being continued today, over 100 years later.
Thanks to the loving dedication and quality consciousness of all the employees, the story of Margarete Steiff and Steiff GmbH remain inseparable from each other.
1847- How it All Began
On 24th July 1847, Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen an der Brenz as the third of four children. When she was 18 months old, she was ill with a high fever, following which her legs became paralyzed and it hurt her to use her right arm.
Three years later, a doctor in Ulm diagnosed her with poliomyelitis. The many doctor's visits and treatments did not help; her parents grew disconsolate. What could little Margarete expect from life now? She would be dependant on the care of others for life.
But the cheerful Margarete fought for her place. She was taken to school in a hay cart by her siblings and neighbouring children, and taken upstairs to the classroom by a woman who lived near to the school.

1862 - Apprenticeship and First Steps
In spite of the pain in her right hand, Margarete went to sewing school and at the age of 17 she completed her training as a seamstress.
Her older sisters Marie and Pauline opened a women’s tailors in 1862 in which she also worked from time to time. When Marie and Pauline left their home town around 8 years later, Margarete continued alone.

1874 - The foundations are laid - the step towards independence
In 1874, Margarete’s father converted her parent’s house and built herself her own work room, a small tailors shop. With the first money that she earned herself, she bought her own sewing machine. She could only move the fly wheel on the right hand side with difficulty, and so without further ado the machine was reversed.
In 1877, Adolf Glatz, her cousin’s husband, advised her to take the step towards independence. Thereupon Margarete founded her own felt clothing business and successfully sold clothes and household articles which she had made. Soon she was able to employ several seamstresses. In the magazine ”Modenwelt“ (Fashion World) from December 8, 1879, Margarete saw the sewing pattern for a small stuffed elephant. Using this pattern, she made the elephant as a pin cushion, but soon the little stuffed animals became very popular as children's toys.

1880 - Margarete Steiff GmbH is founded
The official founding date of Steiff Manufacture was 1880. The first big seller was the elephant, which her younger brother Fritz sold at the nearby Heidenheim market. Just six years later Margarete had sold over 5,000 elephants and was now designing other stuffed animals, too. In 1890, Fritz built a house for his sister, with a flat on the first floor, designed for disabled people, and a small shop on the first floor. At the house in what is today ”Margarete Steiff Straße“ (Margarete Steiff Road) there is the sign “Filz-Spielwaren-Fabrik” (Felt Toy Factory).
In 1892 the first illustrated Steiff catalogue was released which showed the diversity of the range. In addition to elephants there were monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, mice, dogs, cats, hares and giraffes. In the catalogue was also Margarete’s motto, "Für Kinder ist nur das Beste gut genug!“ (for children, only the best is good enough!“).
One year later, on March 3rd 1893, the toy factory was entered in the trade register as ”Margarete Steiff, Felt Toy Factory Giengen/Brenz”. For the first time the toys were presented at the Leipzig toy trade fair. Margarete now employed 4 seamstresses and 10 home workers.

1902 - The Teddy bear is born ... and conquers the world
Richard Steiff, Margarete’s creative favourite nephew, entered the company in 1897. He attended the school of applied arts in Stuttgart and studied in England. His animal sketches were the basis for many Steiff creations. In 1902 he designed the "Bear 55PB" bears, the world's first stuffed toy bears with moveable arms and legs. When searching for a suitable covering, Richard found the cuddly and good for coloring mohair plush produced by the Florweberei Schulte (Schulte pile weaving mill) in Duisburg.
Margarete herself remained skeptical, but Richard was allowed to present his bears at the Leipzig toy trade fair.
The breakthrough came when an American trader discovered the bears and ordered 3,000 of them. The bears began an unprecedented selling success in the USA from 1906 under the name of Teddy Bear - named after the American president Theodore ”Teddy“ Roosevelt.

1904 - A"Steiff - Knopf im Ohr" (Button in Ear) - a brand sign arises and an eventful life comes to an end
In 1907, 400 employees and 1,800 home workers produced 973,999 teddy bears and a total of around 1,700,000 toys. An international company arose which continually expanded its product range.
Margarete Steiff died on the 9th of May 1909 at the age of 61, following a lung infection.
This was a hard blow for the Steiff family, friends and employees. Margarete’s nephews took over the company and people from all over the world continue to dream her dream even today. Margarete Steiff created something which is larger than life.
1910 - Steiff worlds arise
In 1910 Steiff won the Grand Prix at the world exhibition in Brussels, show pieces with a multitude of stuffed toys and animals inspired the public.
The ”Steiff Circus“ used mechanically-moved figures for the first time. One of the most successful show pieces, "Noah’s Ark", came about four years later. Then there were hard times but not only for the company: in the hard years of the war and after, Steiff finally had to adjust their range - paper-type materials meant that the so called ”paper teddy bears“ came into existence, and toys made of wood were added to the range.

1927 - Hard times in a positive sense
In the "Golden Twenties" there was once again a demand for fabric and plush. Steiff introduced assembly line production in order to satisfy the high demand for, above all, their stuffed dogs. The plush dog Molly went down a storm and over 500,000 were sold by 1932.
1951 - The new beginning
The next difficult time was during the World War II. After the end of the war the company restarted in 1947, and just a year later it had nearly 1,000 employees, and 5 years later twice as many. Among other things this rapid growth was due to Mecki, the mascot of a television newspaper and a figure from the puppet feature film by the Diehl brothers, which was manufactured by Steiff as a stuffed puppet from 1951.
In 1953 the Teddy bear celebrated its 50th birthday - the jubilee bear ”Jackie“ was presented for this occasion in a completely new design - as a funny bear child with a small belly button.

1980 - 100 years of dreams in cloth and plush
The 80’s began with the company's 100th year anniversary, when the Margarete Steiff Museum was opened in Giengen - a forerunner of today’s experience museum, ”The World of Steiff“. In addition, Steiff began to produce animal replicas in limited editions for their fans. ”Petsy“ - the children’s favourite captured the market and the hearts of Steiff friends around the globe.
1992 - Steiff Club
Then, finally on the 1st of April 1992, the Steiff Club was founded for lovers and collectors of all Steiff animals, with exclusive club advantages and own club editions.
In order to be able to present their own products in the cities in an appropriate surrounding, the first Steiff Gallery was opened in Hamburg in 1997 on the anniversary of Margarete Steiff’s 150th birthday. Three years later Cologne, Munich and Dusseldorf also had their Steiff Galleries, followed by Berlin, Vienna, Nuremburg and Stuttgart. In 2003, there were openings in Kiel, Hanover, Wiesbaden, Zurich and a second Steiff Gallery in Hamburg. In 2004 a Steiff gallery opened in Bromley, London.

005 - The new millennium
Naturally, the success story continued into the new century, and new paths were walked. The world première of the musical ”Teddy - A Musical Dream“ took place in 2002. Also in Giengen, the home of all Steiff animals, there were things going on: the "World of Steiff" experience was presented in 2003 for the first time. Up until 2005 the ”World of Steiff“ experience museum was built on the company grounds, according to instructions of architect Andreas Ramseier. It is an architectural paramount achievement and offers an animated dream world for the whole family on an area of 2,400m². Just right for the 125 year company jubilee "the World of Steiff" opened its gates. The icing on the cake of the company jubilee was the costly 125 carat Teddy bear edition.
For the first time in 2006, the Steiff Summer was hosted in the company grounds in Giengen an der Brenz,a large summer festival, which is especially held for Steiff friends and families and offers a lot of fun and excitement for all age groups. By 1907, almost a million teddy bears were produced. In 2007 - exactly 100 years later - the jubilee edition "A Million Hugs" was published on this occasion.

The history of Steiff

24 JULY 1847 - MARGARETE
STEIFF IS BORN
On 24 July 1847, Margarete was born in Giengen, near Ulm,
Germany, the third of four children. Her father was a master builder, Friedrich
Steiff, her mother Maria Margarete Steiff, née Hähnle.
1849 - A CRUEL STROKE OF
FATE
When Margarete was 18 months old, she suffered a high fever and as a
result her legs became paralysed and it was painful to use her right arm. Three
years later, a doctor in Ulm diagnosed her with polio. Many attempted cures and
doctor visits were all in vain and her parents begin to despair.
1858 - FIRST CHALLENGES
Full of zest for life, Margarete fought to lead a normal life. She was taken to
school in a handcart by her siblings and neighbouring children. A woman living
near the school carried her up into the classroom every day. In spite of the
pain in her right hand, Margarete also took sewing lessons, initially against
her father's wishes. At 17, she finally completed her training as a seamstress.
1862 - A DREAM COMES TRUE
Margarete's elder sisters - Marie and Pauline - opened a dressmaker's shop in
which Margarete worked part-time. When Marie and Pauline left their home town
some 8 years later, Margarete continued on her own.
1874 - A LITTLE WORKSHOP OF
HER OWN Margarete's father converted the family home and set up a workroom for
her - a small dressmaking workshop. From her first earnings, Margarete bought a
sewing machine of her own. Because the flywheel on the right-hand side was
difficult for Margarete to operate, she had the ingenious idea of simply
turning the machine around.
1877 - FIRST STEPS TOWARDS
GOING INTO BUSINESS
Adolf Glatz, her cousin's husband, advised her to go into
business on her own. Margarete opened a ready-to-wear felt clothing business to
sell clothing and household articles she made herself. Before long, she was
able to take on several seamstresses.
1879 - THE
"ELEFäNTLE"
In an issue of a magazine called "Modenwelt"
dated 8th December, Margarete saw a pattern for a small elephant made of
fabric. Based on this design, she sewed a pincushion shaped like a small
elephant, the "Elefäntle". Soon the small fabric animals proved to be
very popular - as toys for children.
1880 - THE BEGINNINGS OF A
FAMILY COMPANY
The official date of foundation of Margarete Steiff GmbH. The
"Elefäntle" developed into the company's first big-selling product.
Her younger brother, Fritz, successfully sold the felt elephants at the nearby
Heidenheim market. Six years later, Margarete had sold over 5,000 elephants. At
this point, Margarete also designed other fabric animals.
1890 - THE FELT TOY
MANUFACTURING FACILITY
Margarete's brother Fritz built his disabled sister a
house with a suitably equipped living area on the first floor and a small shop
on the ground floor. The house was named "Felt Toy Manufacturing
Facility" (Filz-Spielwaren-Fabrik). Today, the street in which this house
is found is called "Margarete-Steiff-Strasse".
1892 - ONLY THE BEST IS
GOOD ENOUGH FOR CHILDREN The first illustrated Steiff catalogue appeared,
showing the wide range of products available. The original elephants were
joined by monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, mice, dogs, cats, rabbits and
giraffes. The catalogue also reflected Margarete's motto: "Only the best
is good enough for children".
1893 - THE FIRST TRADE FAIR
On 3 March 1893, the felt toy manufacturing facility was entered in the
commercial register as "Margarete Steiff, felt toy factory Giengen/Brenz".
The toys were showcased for the first time at the Leipzig Toy Fair. Margarete
now had a workforce of four seamstresses and ten outworkers.
1897 - AN ADDED INJECTION
OF CREATIVITY
Richard Steiff, Margarete's favourite nephew, joined the company.
Richard studied at the School of Art in Stuttgart as well as studying in
England. His sketches of animals form the basis of many Steiff creations
1902 - BIRTH OF THE TEDDY
BEAR
Richard designed "Bear 55 PB", the world's first toy bear with
jointed arms and legs. While looking for a suitable material for the fur,
Richard found the cuddly and dyeable mohair plush, manufactured by the Schulte
pile-fabric weaving mill in Duisburg.
1903 - TEDDY BEAR TAKES THE
WORLD BY STORM
Margarete herself was rather sceptical, but allowed Richard to
present his bear at the Leipzig Toy Fair. The breakthrough came when an
American businessman discovered the bear and placed an order for 3,000. The
bear enjoyed unprecedented levels of sales in the USA, where, from 1906
onwards, it is sold under the name "Teddy bear" - after the US
President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt.
1904 - STEIFF -
"BUTTON IN EAR" The trademark "Steiff - Button in Ear" was
developed by another of Margarete's nephews, Franz Steiff. The aim of this
trademark was to fend off the vast numbers of cheap imitations and to make the
company's own high-quality products unmistakable. Margarete won the Grand Prix
at the World Exhibition in St. Louis.
1906 - AN INTERNATIONAL
COMPANY IS FOUNDED
Founding of Margarete Steiff GmbH - the name under which the
company still trades.
1907 - THE COMPANY GOES
INTERNATIONAL
974,000 Teddy bears were produced by 400 staff and 1,800
outworkers - making a total of approximately 1,700,000 toys. The product range
was constantly expanded.
9 MAY 1909 - LARGER THAN
LIFE
Margarete Steiff died of pneumonia at the age of 61. A hard blow for the
whole Steiff family, her friends and her employees. Margarete's nephews took
over the running of the company and people all over the world have been keeping
her flame alive ever since. Margarete Steiff created something that is larger
than life
1910 - STEIFF WORLDS EMERGE
Steiff won the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Brussels, captivating
onlookers with a variety of rag dolls and soft toys. The "Steiff
Circus" used mechanically moving figures for the first time. Four years
later came the "Noah's Ark", one of the most successful showpieces
ever.
1919 - HARD TIMES
During
the tough war and post-war years, Steiff had to adapt its product range
accordingly, with substitute fabric being used to a great extent. A kind of
cellulose material was used for what became known as the "paper Teddy
bear". Furthermore, toys made of domestic woods were included in the
product range.
1925 - FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS
The advent of the Golden Twenties brought about a revival in demand for fabric
and plush. Steiff introduced production lines to cope with the high demand,
above all for its toy dogs. Molly the Steiff dog proved to be irresistible and
over half a million were sold by 1932.
1947 - NEW BEGINNINGS
The
company resumed production after the end of the Second World War. A mere 12
months later, Steiff has a workforce of almost 1,000, a figure which is to
double five years later.
1951 - MECKI TAKES THE
WORLD BY STORM
Mecki, the hedgehog mascot of German TV magazine Hörzu and a
figure from the Diehl Brothers' puppet films, was produced under licence by
Steiff in the form of a doll. The Mecki doll quickly became a top seller the
world over.
1953 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
TEDDY BEAR
The Teddy bear celebrates its 50th birthday. The "Jackie"
anniversary bear was presented with a whole new design - as a cute baby bear
with a hint of a navel.
1980 - 100 YEARS OF DREAMS
IN FABRIC AND PLUSH
The Margarete Steiff Museum - predecessor of today's
"Die Welt von Steiff" Adventure Museum - opened in Giengen to mark
the 100th anniversary of the company. At this time, Steiff also began producing
limited numbers of replicas for Steiff enthusiasts.
1984 - CHILDREN'S FAVOURITE
PETSY
A firm favourite with the young, Petsy captureed the market and the
hearts of Steiff enthusiasts around the globe.
1992 - THE STEIFF CLUB On 1
April, the Steiff Club was founded as an organisation for enthusiasts and
collectors of Steiff animals. With exclusive Club benefits and Club editions.
2002 - TEDDY LEARNS TO
DANCE
World premiére of the musical "Teddy - a musical fantasy"
2005 - 125 YEARS OF STEIFF
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the company, the new Steiff Adventure
Museum "Die Welt von Steiff" opened its doors for the first time.
Steiff has created more than 20,000 different animals over the last 125 years.
The crowning glory of the museum is the extremely valuable 125 Karat Teddy bear
edition.
2006 - THE STEIFF SUMMER
For the very first time, the Steiff Summer event was held on the company
grounds in Giengen - a giant summer party for Steiff enthusiasts and families
with lots of exciting attractions and a promise of fun for guests of all ages.
